Over time, these batteries are susceptible to a "memory effect", which can reduce their battery capacity. The memory effect can be cured by fully discharging the battery before recharging it. BatteryAmnesia provides a safe, fast and automatic way to deep discharge your PowerBook's battery. It automatically bypasses the low battery warning dialogs, and prevents the "soft" sleep brought on by those dialogs. Instead, BatteryAmnesia will run your PowerBook's battery down until the "hard" hardware shutdown occurs, which is at a lower voltage. This provides the best discharge possible. Version 1.3.0 adds... - Name changed from DeepDischarge to BatteryAmnesia to prevent trademark infringments. - Color support added. - Plot of discharge curve now displayed. Version 1.2.0 added... - Speech Manager support, so BatteryAmnesia can "speak" voltages. - Ability to quit other applications, to prevent data loss. Shareware; $5 registration fee suggested. I posted this note on a Rochester, NY FC BBS (Mac's Last Stand 716-247-9056) and the one reply todate (last note of this message) makes it seem that this new policy might be more Apple's than CompUSA's fault. This game is based on Omega version 0.75 and is implemented some more features in it. o Hardware/Software Requirement Macintosh series hardware (main window uses Black&White color) 2MB RAM for the application System 6.0.7 and later o Installing and Starting the Game Just put 'omega' file and 'OmegaLib' folder (with its includes) on your disk. They must be in the same folder. Double-click the 'omega' icon and start the game . You can also double- click a saved file's icon to continue the game (although the saved file will be deleted after loading). o TODO in the Game If you double-click the 'omega' icon, you will see the title screen and high score board. After that, you will be asked which way to select, "run a character" or "play yourself." If you choose [r] then the character is determined by random number (you can still re-roll them). If you choose [p] then you are asked some (/many?) questions to determine the character >From your personality, and the result will be saved (by your choice) to the '.omegarc' file and it can be used for the new games afterwards. And note that the player's default name is set to the user-name of Network ID (but it can be changed by 'R' command). Between the play, you can use '?' command to display help messages on the screen. To read the outlines for this game, choose "a: Overview." To learn about commands, choose "l: Dungeon/City/Other Command List" or "m: Countryside Command List." o Release Note I ported the source from Omega version 0.75, and also ported curses library from PCcurses version 1.4. Omega is copyright (c) 1987,1988,1989 by Laurence Raphael Brothers PCcurses was made by Bjorn Larsson (900114). And I added some features by public demand: 1. Gong. And then there was color. Polyominoes 5.0 is the long-overdue color version of Polyominoes. A polyomino is a piece made up entirely of squares connected edge-to-edge. For example, a domino is a polyomino with 2 squares. In Polyominoes, you can use pentominoes, tetrominoes, trominoes, hexominoes, or create a set of your own pieces using the Piece Editor. Polyominoes is really three games in one. In game mode, you have a very interesting strategy game in which you try to put the last piece on the board. The pieces can be flipped or rotated in any manner. You can use any of the over 60 different boards, or create one of your own using the Board Editor. In puzzle mode, you can try to place all the pieces on any of the boards. In spanning puzzle mode, you try to RspanS the board with the fewest number of pieces. The program keeps track of all of your best efforts. Polyominoes is Shareware, $8.00 registration fee. It should work on any Macintosh with either System 6 or 7, with or without 32-bit addressing. It should work with both color and monochrome monitors. Note to users with gray scale monitors: you should either play around with the color settings in the program, or trick it into using black/white mode. To make it run in black/white, set your monitor depth to black/white before running. I received a number of responses to this problem including many from those with very similar problems although the details varied. The following is a summary of possible solutions and my conclusion about the probably root cause. karches@Onramp.NET (Tom Karches) suggested: > Be sure you select either "internal modem" or "external modem" from the > PowerBook Setup control panel. A good idea, especial for those like myself who commonly use both the internal (for a modem) and external (for a printer) modem ports since the printer port is use for a LocalTalk network connection. (How about one more serial port Apple?) However, this was not the problem. ace@tidbits.com (Adam C. Engst) wrote: > This sounds like a conflict with something else - try shutting off > all but MacTCP and the PPP extension and control panel - that's all > that's really necessary. > > I always suspect fax software on principle... Another excellent idea but not the problem since I had already verified that the situation persisted with all non-Apple extensions and control panels disabled by using Extension Manager. And, while I share Adam's suspicions of fax software, FaxSTF 3.0.1(beta), which used to be the source of many problems, now appears to be part of the solution (see below). ljb@merit.edu (Larry J. Blunk) took the time to exchange several e-mail messages with me trying to isolate the source of the problem. He first had me verify that my modem is a "non-bus" modem (a modem that is just attached to the modem port internally and doesn't need to register a driver in the CTB) and that the port speed was set to greater than 14,400 baud since: > In general, most modems can't autobaud at 14,400 (including 14,400 modems). > You should use either 19,200, 38,400, or 57,600. My modem is a "non-bus" modem and I had the port speed set at 57,600. He then suggested that I attempt to log into my PPP Server manually using the Terminal Window in MacPPP 2.0.1. This was to: > see if the modem is responding to AT commands at all. This will bypass the > built-in dialer code. This worked like a charm. I had absolutely no difficult manual entering my initialization string, the server's telephone number and logging in using the Terminal Window. But MacPPP still could not auto-dial the server. Finally, Mr. Blunk concluded: > MacPPP initially sends an ATE0V1 and waits for an "OK" to check for the > presence of a modem. As far as I can tell, the modem is not responding > to this for some reason. I suspect that the modem resets itself on DTR > being raised and this is taking some time. MacPPP waits a second before > sending the command, but perhaps this modem requires longer. This is, I believe, correct. It has always been my impression that the Zoom internal modem was slower to respond than the Zoom external that I use with my desktop machine. In this case the difference in response speed is significant and probably the root cause of my problem. For those who are afflicted with this problem, there are three courses of action: 1) Use the Terminal Window in MacPPP 2.0.1 and manual log onto your Server. 2) Use FaxSTF 3.0.1(beta) to mediate the transfer of the internal modem port to MacPPP (turn on the fax software and set it up to auto-answer, FaxSTF will smoothly, but slowly, release the internal modem port to MacPPP when you click "Open" and MacPPP's built-in dialer will work). 3) Wait for the nice people at Merit Network and the University of Michigan, to release an update of MacPPP that will allow setting a variable time delay before it gives up on slower PowerBook modems. We're told that System 7.5 will include MacTCP. That's good, especially since it seems most Macs come with Ethernet built in these days, and TCP/IP is pretty standard. I'm wondering, though, about Appletalk routing--basically the functionality of Apple's Internet Router, I guess. Seems to me with Ethernet standard on many Macs, but not available or practical on others, that an Ethernet-LocalTalk bridge for AppleTalk ought to be a standard part of System 7.x. In my case, a home office, I have an old IIcx with a third-party Ethernet card, a Quadra 610 with built-in Ethernet, a LW II NT (LocalTalk only), and a Duo 210 (ditto). Also on Ethernet are Unix and Windows. It's frustrating not to be able to run AppleTalk over Ethernet between the IIcx & 610, given that I have the hardware. I can do it, of course, but then neither machine can talk to the LaserWriter--or the Duo. Related to that, and given MacTCP becoming standard, I'd like to be able to run TCP/IP apps on the Duo (say), tunneling through LocalTalk to the 610 and thence put on the Ethernet. I know I can buy various routers here and there to solve most of this, but since the hardware is *standard* on new Macs, seems the me that the basic enabling software should be as well. Somebody please tell me to please shut up, 7.5 already has a router built in! ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 25 May 1994 12:13:30 PDT From: Bruce_Rubin.Wbst845@xerox.com Subject: [?]How do I turn off the page numbering in SimpleText or TeachTextv7.0? And the user of that computer cannot empty it from their trash until the first person quits Photoshop. Any help would be appreciated. Here is our unique setup, that I hope contains some hint of what the problem really is. First the Scan stations are Mac Quadra 800 72/230 running Adobe PhotoShop 2.5.1. These operators work completely locally, and have no remote drives mounted. We are using PixelCraft 7650 scanners. When the operators are finished scanning a batch, they move it to a work completed folder on their own machine. Now the uniqe part of our set up: we have another Mac Quadra 800 32/230 that is set up to automate the streamlining (vectorizing) of the scanned images. This machine has the drives of all our scan stations mounted. We have developed several AppleScripts which watch the completed folders on each of the Scan stations, and picks up any work it finds there, copies it to its own drive, and then start streamlining the batches. When this is done the batches are automatically forwarded to other Macs where our graphics editors do their thing. Several times a week, this Temp folder will appear in the Streamline stations trash can and mess up our automated process. We have not been able to see it actually being moved or created in the trash can, we only see it sometime after the fact, since the streamline station is usually unattended. Having worked out the kinks with installing the software on the powerbooks, everything seems to be going smoothly on that side. BUT.. (there'ss always a but, isn't there?) We decided we wanted to take advantage of the ability to string printers on EW's. There doesn't seem to be any problem with doing it on a HP 4/ML. I simply checked the "printer compatibility" mode check box with Farallon's adapter setup utility, and plugged it into the 4/ML. Pow, there it was on the ethernet, accessible from just about anywhere! Unfortunately, it has NOT proved to be so easy with a DeskWriter C. I think it's the drivers. The printer doesn't show up under either of the current drivers I have-Deskwriter C (Serial) or Deskwriter C (Localtalk). Now this doesn't really surprise me. What I want to know is: has any individual or company been in a similar situation and found a solve, from either Farallon or HP? If I had newer/better/different drivers, would I be able to see the DWC on the net? Is there meaning to the universe? (whoops, sorry, wrong question) I am going to find the recent references to the HP driver site, and check what's out there. You have two ways to do it. While the chart is open, select all and copy (copies as PICT) and you can paste into some other program which can handle embedded documents. Another way which will work w/o embedding is to create an embedded chart (if you use separate chart documents, copy the chart by selecting all and then copy, then open a worksheet and paste) in the worksheet. When you click on the chart once and copy, it will copy as a PICT which can be pasted anywhere. Yet another way is to create the embedded PICT and then select a range of cells which may contain whatever you want and press command-shift-c. This will copy the selected range to the clipboard as a PICT document that can be pasted somewhere else, like the scrapbook or another program. I AM able to copy/paste into the ALIAS of >the hard disk icon and to/from all OTHER icons like normal! Hi! I had exactly the same problem with a multiple-user machine here. What happens usually is as follows: -> Everytime you paste a custom icon on a folder/disk, an invisible file "Icon\r" is created at the root level of that disk/folder (the "\r" is a "return" character, because technically the file is not called "Icon", it's "Icon" + ). -> Then the "Has custom icon" bit is set for the folder/disk. What happened in your case? -> The invisible file "Icon\r" was deleted (how? your guess is as good as mine...) -> The Finder can't find the icon file so it puts up the generic "Document" icon. -> You can't paste a new icon, because the Finder can't delete the old "Icon\r" file before creating a new one. What's the (very simple) fix? -> Find a folder that has a custom icon. -> Look inside that folder with a tool that "sees" invisible files and changes their attributes, such as FileBuddy or ResEdit. Open the "Icon\r" file. Make it visible (I use Get File Info in ResEdit). -> Open the folder in the Finder. There is now a file called "Icon" that is visible. _OPTION-Drag_ that file to the root level of your hard drive (i.e. where you keep your System Folder and stuff). This will copy the "Icon\r" file to its destination, not move it. -> Make _both_ files invisible again with the tool you used above. -> Restart your Mac. Now, your HD's icon should be the same as the folder you pulled the icon from. No problem, since now you can cut-and-paste icons normally! I think you should definitely not be pinging so much; aside from the memory problem you have noted, your constant (once-a-second) pinging will consume a significant fraction of your SLIP connection, AND it will slow down your Mac, AND it will tie-up the SLIP server, slowing down everyone else's access needlessly. A much less intrusive solution would be to make Eudora check for email every 5-10 minutes. This will prevent the idle-line timeout (which is set to 20 minutes), without tying up unnecessary system resources. You certainly don't need to ping every second to prevent an idle timeout. By the way, if you're going away from your Mac for over 20 minutes, you should seriously consider dropping your SLIP connection. As you know, panix's SLIP lines are currently oversubscribed, and a lot of people have to wade through many BUSY signals to get online. People who sit on SLIP lines for no reason just aggrevate this problem. (Panix can't add new lines until next month.) Panix management has discovered that some people have been keeping their SLIP line up for days at a time, during which time they obviously can't be using it personally. I believe some sort of corrective mesaures are being planned to prevent this from happening in future. >1. I was net surfing last week, and found this press release on Apple's Higher Education gopher server. Since Adam just talked a little bit about QuickTime 2.0's MIDI support, I thought I'd share this with the net. Since I've been looking to get into some MIDI timfoolery for a while, but couldn't afford the hardware, this little bit of propaganda really got me excited about the next version of QT--even more than the original "digital video" concept did! Enjoy! Neil --------- THE FOLLOWING RELEASE MOVED OVER PR NEWSWIRE ON TUESDAY, MAY 10, 1994 AT 8:31 AM, EST. Contact: Katy Boos Apple Computer, Inc. 408-974-4451 Kellie Whitmire Roland Corporation 213-685-5141 ext. 423 Apple Brings Music to the Macintosh with Help from Roland Corporation CUPERTINO, California--May 10, 1994--Apple Computer, Inc., a computer and information industry pioneer, and Roland Corporation, a leading manufacturer of professional musical instruments, today announced an agreement in which Apple will license Roland's musical instrument sound collection for use in future versions of QuickTime , Apple's software that brings multimedia capabilities to computers and consumer electronics devices. The Roland Sound Canvas musical instrument collection includes digitized samples of more than 10 instrument families including piano, organ, guitar, bass, strings and orchestra, ensemble, brass, reed, percussion, sound effects and more. These sounds can be used to create and play music on computers--without users needing to know the technical nuances of MIDI technology. "Until now, our instrument samples have been used primarily by professional musicians," commented Ikutaro Kakehashi, president of Roland Corporation. "The rapid growth in the multimedia industry, however, has prompted us to lower the barriers to entry for people who want to create and play music, without assembling an entire music studio. Apple's move to include our Sound Canvas libraries with QuickTime will make high-quality music much more widely available, while allowing a natural upgrade path to Roland's professional instruments." "Like music in feature films, music in CD-ROM titles and multimedia presentations results in a more approachable, entertaining user experience," said Tom Ryan, manager of the AppleSoft Media Software Group. "Over time, music will become a standard part of the Macintosh experience." QuickTime Music Architecture Makes Music Easy The QuickTime Music Architecture, a component of QuickTime 2.0, includes several features that make it easier for computer users to create, edit, play, and synchronize music with video. Through the use of the Roland instrument library and Apple's proprietary sound synthesis technology, the architecture requires no additional hardware to play music. A key feature of the QuickTime Music Architecture is that it requires very little of the user's disk space. For example, Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata would require nearly 180MB if recorded as CD-quality audio, but when stored as a QuickTime movie it only uses 75K of disk space. Or an entire corporate presentation--complete with high- quality images with background music--could fit on one floppy disk. The QuickTime Music Architecture is also compatible with MIDI, yet is distinctly different from MIDI. Any Standard MIDI File can be converted directly into a QuickTime music movie, and MIDI devices, such as MIDI keyboards, can record directly into music movies. In addition, the architecture is scalable, so it will automatically take advantage of the best available device for playback--including MIDI devices, such as those offered by Roland. Unlike MIDI, additional hardware is not required and users do not need to know how to configure instruments or channels, or understand complicated file formats. QuickTime 2.0: Bigger, Faster Video QuickTime 2.0, announced this February, not only includes enhanced support for music, but also provides greatly increased performance for video. The latest version of QuickTime provides for larger video windows to be played at faster frame rates, resulting in full-screen movies without the addition of hardware. QuickTime 2.0 also provides an infrastructure for development and delivery of interactive television applications, including MPEG support and network enhancements so that QuickTime can address distributed networks and devices. System Requirements QuickTime 2.0 will run on any color-capable (68020 or later) Macintosh computer running System 7 or 6.0.7 with at least 2 MB of memory. Availability The QuickTime 2.0 developer kit for the Macintosh is expected to be available in mid-1994. As with previous versions, QuickTime 2.0 is designed to permit cross-platform compatibility between platforms which support it. Headquartered in Cupertino, California, Apple Computer, Inc. Everything loads normally when the RD extension is moved out of the Extensions folder. I upgraded to version 1.0.2. and the problem persists. Any assistance would be appreciated. -- Jay ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 25 May 1994 16:19:03 -0700 From: Alex Metcalf Subject: RAMDoubler points of interest I have a few personal pointers and opinions on RAMDouber: 1) Users upgrading to version 1.0.2: I have heard (but haven't bothered to check yet) that the 'pref' resource has been removed. This was the resource that everyone and their dog could change to get 'RAMTripler' and so on. Therefore, if you actually rely on having triple RAM, you may want to reconsider upgrading. Having said that, I've heard that there's a couple of sections of the code you can change to increase the RAM: hopefully someone can post some more info on that? 2) A few days ago I posted a note saying that RAMDoubler seems to slow down like it did in version 1.0. I've since done a bit of testing, and it appears that interrupt routines are affected. For the technically challenged, this means things such as Frank Seide's excellent Sound Trecker, which plays music. So, the pauses (in the Sound Trecker music, for example) seem to be caused by moving memory rather than disk access. I have 8 megabytes of real RAM, but even loading a 2 meg program (Sound Trecker) and then switching back to the Finder causes a break in the music. Perhaps this is because of the patch that Connetix have made to fix the bug with a memory routine. Anyway, I haven't checked whether normal sound playing is affected yet, or whether QuickTime may experience the same pauses in sound, graphics or both. 3) I've generally been very pleased with RAMDoubler. The product works well, and I'm lucky that I have access to the Internet to get the updates. However, we have never received anything by mail from Connetix, and yes, we sent our registration card in. I'm in the UK; has anyone in the U.S. received anything from Connetix? If I hadn't been on the Internet, I wouldn't have received the updates to RAMDoubler, some of which are quite important bug fixes and improvements. If the U.S. customers receive information, why can't they just pay that bit extra and send even a postcard saying there's an update available? I think it's not much to expect after paying a considerable amount (prices in the UK tend to be higher). Anyway, just my two pence. :-) Alex -- Alex Metcalf, Best Before Yesterday Mac programmer in C, C++, HyperTalk, assembler alex@metcalf.demon.co.uk ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 25 May 1994 16:29:28 -0400 From: mingo@panix.com (Charlie Mingo) Subject: Reading Japanese (NEC) 1.2M floppies (A) Hisashi Fujinaka writes: >Does anyone know how to read 1.2M 3.5" floppies? My Mac is a Quadra 605, 80 MB Apple disk, 12 MB of RAM running System 7.1 Here is the list of System Extensions: Disinfectant INIT (version 3.5) Soft Pivot Driver (version 2.2) Gatekeeper (version 1.3 of 12-Nov-93) Gatekeeper Aid (version 1.3 of 12-Nov-93) Caps Lock (version 7.1) This application used to run just fine. I checked for viruses and reinstalled White Knight a number of times. Please help me..... Felix Kreisel (617)253-8625 The opinions are my own. Hello, My sister is running an old DeskWriter driver on her PowerBook 145 (one of those drivers whose "version number" begins with an "A" instead of a number). I'd like to update her to the new 5.0 driver, but before I do so, I'm wondering if anyone has had any bad experiences with printing from the DeskWriter 5 driver from either WriteNow 4 or Excel 4. My sister has an original DeskWriter and is running System 7.1. Reply to me, and I'll summarize any responses back to the list... Thanks, tonya Tonya Engst, TidBITS Editor -- tonya@tidbits.com --info@tidbits.com Author of The Word Book for Macintosh Users -- twb@tidbits.com ------------------------------ End of Info-Mac Digest ******************************
